Welcome to Zurich

Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to announce the third European Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Summit to be held on October 16, 2015 in Zurich, Switzerland. It is organized by the International PFO Consortium in collaboration with the Institute for Medicine and Communication (IMK) Ltd.

The summit aims at bringing together neurologists, interventional cardiologists, cardio- and neurovascular ultrasound technologists, and other specialists sharing a common interest in diagnostic, treatment and prevention of patients with stroke and PFO. This will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the results of recent randomized controlled trials (RCT) with leading experts, to learn about the newest ongoing research projects, and to meet old and new colleagues and friends.

The management of PFO-related stroke is embarking on a new exciting period for many reasons, all of which are covered by the agenda of the summit. First, it is high time to rethink the definition of cryptogenic stroke, to clarify the diagnostic doubts, and the possible clinical approaches. Second, after nearly a decade of waiting, three RCT have recently provided results that are unlikely to resolve the eternal dilemma of PFO-closure versus medical treatment. Instead, the debate has inflamed even more, since a secondary (per-protocol) analysis of the RESPECT trial has reached statistical significance in favor of PFO closure. Third, while the game between PFO closure and medical treatment (warfarin or aspirin) is still undecided, new competitors –novel oral anticoagulants – are about to claim a role in the secondary prevention of PFO-related stroke. Last but not least, pathogenic implications of PFO in areas other than stroke are still under investigation and will be separately discussed during the meeting.

We look forward to stimulating and fruitful discussions in the cozy atmosphere of the Sorell Hotel Zürichberg. You will be inspired by the fantastic views of Zurich, Lake Zurich and the Swiss Alps. Located at the boundaries of the city, the venue can easily and quickly be accessed by public transportation. The Zurich-Kloten International Airport is only 20 minutes away; the famous Bahnhofstrasse and Zurich’s city center can be reached by streetcar in just 10 minutes.

We look forward to welcoming you in Zurich!
